Just a few random thoughts about physical science and physical "reality"...

    1. "Science" assumes that external reality exists whether or not it is observed.

    2. External reality cannot be proved since all of our observations are necessarily purely mental images.

    3. An assumption that by its very nature cannot be proved is not a physical assumption, but is called a metaphysical assumption. In science (math) these assumptions are called axioms.

    4. The bedrock of physical science, the axioms, are metaphysical assumptions.

    5. The laws of classical physics are based on metaphysical assumptions!

What about the large hadron collider this summer? The largest science experiment ever ?
10B spent on trying to prove what Einstein couldn't : the theory of everything.

Philosophy has a place , but so does observation , measurement and science. True science observes our universe , and has a place . The basis of math is perfect. take 1+1 apples, are there not 2 ?
From there.... calculus , etc. is derived. I believe all can co-exist. Science , philosophy and religion.

    Hi, Mary!

I am not trying to negate the basis of physical science. What I am looking at is the basis of "objectivity". The assumption of an external reality is the assumption that there is a real world that is external to our mind and senses, and that it exists whether or not we as observers exist, and whether or not we are observing it. This assumption can not be proven because all our perceptions are mental images. If you and I are standing next to each other, and observe that an object is "red", we can agree that the object is "red", but I don't know if your perception of "red" is the same as mine.

Personally, I found the news of the collider very exciting. It is with the subatomic particles that the laws physics seem to border on the metaphysical.

I hope the truth of our existence is revealed , even with science.

I think physical science is actually movingin that direction. I'm not a particle physicist, or anything like that, but I understand that as scientific experimentation and observiation of subatomic particles proceeds, we get more into the realm of quantum theory, which is based on probability than actual observation.

i love this thread and it's content...quantum physics is the bomb...and yes YAS...

    probability = potential...

one of the best books i have ever read, is "The Tao of Physics", by Frank Capra; he also wrote "Turning Point", which the movie "Mindwalk" was based on...great movie for intellectuals like us...lol

The Tao of Physics interconnects Eastern Mythicism with quantum physics, and is an excellent source of awareness wisdom...imo...very enlightening...

The Turning Point speaks to the System's Theory, which i am a great supporter of...

anyways, continue on...i love revisting this subject as it always has something new to contribute...

    always, star.

    i love this topic...

what is very intriging, at least to me, is that the potentiality of existence, is relative to all other existence...only by their relationships, does anything exist...

iow, without the relationship between potential particles, they do not exist...although they have the potential to exist, depending on the relationship, to other particles...lol

    harmony of the spheres...

this is also the basis for the systems theory...everything depends on everything else...

take the tree...it depends on it's roots, the soil, the rain, the sun, it's trunk, it's branches, it's leaves, it's fruit, etc...and then it gives off oxygen into the atmosphere, which affects it's own growth, the sun, the rain, it's soil...etc...

we can take it as far as our minds will allow, and also state that the tree provides shelter and food for the birds and insects...bark from the tree trunk, the wood, etc. supplies many things that we humans have grown accustomed too...this could go on and on, and does, in systems theory...

take the economy...it is as far reaching as the human mind can imagine, and cannot be contained in a catagory by itself that does not infact affect everything else...

what we have here, is a living, breathing, organism...that affects and is affected by everything it includes...and it includes everything...

we look at the effect on our earth of the destruction of the rain forrests alone, and we can maybe even see how infact the simple fluttering of a butterfly's wings, can be felt on the other side of the world...

it is all very interesting indeed...
