    "All-pervasiveness is said to be the waking; all-shining is said to be the dream; perfection ('ananta') is said to be the sleep; that which underlies these is 'asi-turiya' (the fourth)." (Talk 332)

    "There are three states only, the waking, dream and sleep. Turiya (fourth) is not a fourth one; it is what underlies these three. But people do not readily understand it. Therefore it is said that this is the fourth state and the only Reality. In fact it is not apart from anything, for it forms the substratum of all happenings; it is the only Truth; it is your very Being. The three states appear as fleeting phenomena on it and then sink into it alone. Therefore they are unreal." (Talk 353)

    "Turiya (the fourth state) only another name for the Self. Aware of the waking, dream and sleep states, we remain unaware of our own Self. Nevertheless the Self is here and now, it is the only Reality. There is nothing else. So long as identification with the body lasts the world seems to lie outside us. Only realise the Self and they are not." (Talk 353)

    "The vegetable kingdom is always in sushupti (sleep); the animals have both swapna (dream) and sushupti (sleep); the gods (celestials) are always in jagrat (waking); man has all the three states; but the clear-sighted yogi abides only in turiya (Fourth), and the highest yogi remains in turyatita (Beyond Turiya) alone." (Talk 617)

    Note (by Self-seeker) : For those who are unfamiliar with the term, "Turiya" ---> Turiya means fourth. The SELF is not describable in any manner. Therefore, there is no appropriate name for it & so, it is called simply, "The fourth" or Turiya.

    Mandukya Upanishad "describes" this state as :
    "
    Neither inward-turned nor outward-turned consciousness, nor the two together; not an undifferentiated mass of consciousness; neither knowing, nor unknowing; invisible, ineffable, intangible, devoid of characteristics, inconceivable, indefinable, its sole essence being the consciousness of its own Self; the coming to rest of all relative existence; utterly quiet; peaceful; blissful: without a second: this is the Ātman, the Self; this is to be realised"

    turyatita (Beyond Turiya)... I havent seen any scriptural support for this concept (upanishads etc). I dont think there is no need for it and it causes more confusion.
    sometimes there is a separation between liberated while alive and after life... sometimes ananda is refered to as 3rd state deep sleep and thus sat/chit is turia... sat + chit = ananda. I know Ramana made a difference between holding samadhi with will (temporary subdued vasanas) and abiding there eternally since the innate tendencied had been finally rooted out. Perhpas thats what he meant.

    You are right, Ekanta. The Mandukya Upanishad doesn't talk about "Turiyatita". When Turiya is not accepted as fourth by Maharishi Ramana, where will "fifth" find its place ? So, Ramana cannot mean it to be a fifth state. But this Turiyatita has been accepted by other saints too ... having similar subtle difference that you said.

    It is difficult for me to comment here more than this. Maharishi Ramana is the authority which cannot be challenged.

    Actually its mentioned in other upanishads... but seems to indicate non-duality just as turiya.

    So is Turiya the Ineffible one, even beyond ineffibility?
